Department Summary

The Department of Mathematics was established in 2008, along with the establishment of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. The Department offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Ph.D. Programs. The department has 28 faculty members, out of which 3 faculty members are professors, 10 faculty members are Associate Professors, and 15 faculty members are Assistant Professors all faculty members are doctorates from IIT’s and reputed universities of India and have a record of good research. Faculty members have sponsored research projects funded by various Govt. agencies eg. NBHM, UGC, DST SERB etc.

Presently the department offers Integrated M.Sc. Ph.D. in Mathematics. We also offer various courses and programs to Industry professionals through work integrated learning programmes. Currently 69 Ph.D Students are there in the Mathematics Dept. Every year the mathematics department celebrates The Indian Mathematical Society Day in December month.

Message from Head of Department (HOD)

At the Department of Mathematics, we are committed to fostering a rigorous academic environment supported by a team of highly qualified and research-driven faculty. Our department emphasizes both theoretical and applied aspects of mathematics, aiming to develop critical thinking and analytical skills in our students. We actively encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation through sponsored research and integrated learning programs. It is our mission to prepare students for both academic excellence and industry relevance.

Department Responsibilities

The Department is responsible for delivering high-quality education in Mathematics at all academic levels—Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral. We design and deliver core and elective courses, conduct tutorials and lab sessions, assess student performance, and contribute to curriculum development. Additionally, the department facilitates research initiatives, organizes conferences, and mentors research scholars.

Research & Innovation

Preferred Research Areas

  • Pure Mathematics (Algebra, Topology, Number Theory)
  • Applied Mathematics (Differential Equations, Mathematical Modeling)
  • Computational Mathematics
  • Data Science and Statistics
  • Optimization and Operations Research

Ongoing Research Projects

The department is currently engaged in multiple research projects funded by reputed bodies such as NBHM, DST, UGC, and SERB. These projects span areas like numerical analysis, mathematical biology, and stochastic processes, and offer research opportunities to both Ph.D. scholars and undergraduate interns.

Research Scholars

Currently, there are 69 Ph.D. scholars working under the guidance of our faculty. They contribute significantly to the department’s research output through publications, conferences, and collaborative projects. Our scholars come from diverse academic backgrounds and are involved in interdisciplinary research activities.

Patents & Innovations

While mathematics research is often theoretical in nature, faculty and scholars contribute to innovations in computational methods, algorithms, and analytical models, which find applications in software tools and industrial simulations. The department encourages faculty to pursue applied research with patent potential in collaboration with other disciplines.

Publications & Journals

The department regularly publishes high-impact research in national and international journals. Faculty and research scholars contribute to reputed publications and are also part of editorial and review boards. Research papers span across various domains including pure, applied, and computational mathematics.
