About the Department

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, started right at the inception of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus in August 2008. The Department has been ranked 351-400 as per the 2021 QS World Rankings in the field of Mechanical Engineering. It is one of the largest departments in terms of faculty strength, consisting of five (5) Professors, seven (7) Associate Professors, eighteen (18) Assistant professors and one (1) adjunct. The department offers a three tier structure of education i.e., B.E (Hons), M.E and PhD programmes with nearly 800 undergraduates, 100 post graduates and 80 Ph.D. students on roll. The department has dynamic and dedicated faculty, ably supported by competent technical and administrative staff. The laboratories are well equipped with some of the state-of-the-art scientific instruments and systems to undertake high-end teaching, research and developmental activities. The department has evolved over time to keep up with the ever-increasing challenges in technology development, while maintaining a strong base in the fundamental aspects of Mechanical Engineering. The basic objective is to generate high quality graduates through meticulous coursework and futuristic research activities. The students in the department are exposed to the problems faced by today’s societies, and are trained to address those problems through innovative thinking to develop appropriate technological solutions. In addition to the regular academic work, the students of the department are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities and workshops.

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus. As one of the largest and most dynamic departments, we take pride in our strong academic foundation, state-of-the-art laboratories, and dedicated faculty. We strive to provide a transformative education that not only addresses the fundamentals of mechanical engineering but also prepares students to tackle future challenges through innovation, research, and collaboration. Our mission is to empower students with technical competence, ethical grounding, and a spirit of inquiry that drives lifelong learning and societal impact.

Department Responsibilities

The department is responsible for delivering high-quality academic programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. It ensures rigorous curriculum development, fosters innovative teaching practices, oversees laboratory and project work, and facilitates student participation in research and industry-linked initiatives. The department also takes the lead in faculty development, student mentoring, industrial collaboration, and curriculum enrichment through workshops and co-curricular activities.

Research & Innovation

Preferred Research Areas

Key research areas include thermofluids, solid mechanics, robotics and automation, advanced manufacturing, computational mechanics, renewable energy systems, and biomechanics. The department also encourages interdisciplinary collaborations across materials science, electronics, and AI-driven mechanical systems.

Ongoing Research Projects

Several research projects are currently underway in collaboration with national agencies and industrial partners. These include studies in alternative energy technologies, robotic automation systems, smart materials, and sustainable manufacturing solutions. Projects often attract external funding and lead to real-world applications.

Research Scholars

The department has a vibrant research scholar community pursuing Ph.D. and M.E. theses. Scholars contribute actively to the department’s research output and are mentored by experienced faculty in both fundamental and applied domains.
