Department Summary

The Department of Mathematics was founded in 2004 and is staffed by highly qualified faculty members with expertise in both pure and applied mathematics. It offers a range of academic programs, including a Bachelor of Engineering in Mathematics and Computing (B.E.(MAC)), a Master of Science in Mathematics (M.Sc.(Maths)), and doctoral programs. Annually, the department admits approximately 140 students into its undergraduate programs. Students are encouraged to pursue careers in education and research across various mathematical disciplines. The department also provides foundational courses for all students enrolled in first-degree programs (B.E. and M.Sc.) at the Institute, ensuring a robust grounding in essential mathematical concepts applicable to engineering and the sciences. Additionally, specialized mathematics courses are available for students in the B.E. (MAC), M.Sc. (Maths), and Ph.D. programs. The department plays a significant role in the Work Integrated Learning Programs (WILP) offered by the Institute, which are tailored for professionals in diverse industries. Graduates from the department are well-prepared for successful careers in science and engineering, as evidenced by the achievements of alumni who have secured positions in leading industries and prestigious institutions worldwide. The department is actively engaged in research and disseminates knowledge through publications, lectures, collaborations, and consultations, thereby contributing to both academic and industrial sectors.

Message from Head of Department (HOD)

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at BITS Pilani, Goa Campus. Since its establishment in 2004, our department has consistently pursued excellence in teaching, research, and outreach. With expertise in both pure and applied mathematics, our faculty is committed to building a mathematically strong and research-driven community of learners. We nurture curiosity, analytical thinking, and innovation through our rigorous academic programs and diverse research initiatives. We invite students and collaborators to explore the breadth and depth of opportunities offered by the department.

Department Responsibilities

The department is responsible for delivering foundational and specialized mathematics courses to students across various programs at the institute. It supports core teaching for B.E. and M.Sc. students and runs its own undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The department also contributes to the Work Integrated Learning Programs (WILP) and plays a key role in academic advising, curriculum design, and research mentoring.

Research & Innovation

Preferred Research Areas

  • Algebra and Number Theory
  • Applied Probability and Statistics
  • Numerical Methods and Scientific Computing
  • Optimization and Operations Research
  • Mathematical Modelling and Simulation
  • Data Analytics and Machine Learning

Ongoing Research Projects

The department is involved in sponsored research projects funded by national agencies like DST, CSIR, and SERB. Current projects include studies in stochastic modelling, graph theory, optimization algorithms, and applied mathematics for engineering systems.

Research Scholars

The doctoral program in mathematics hosts several full-time and part-time scholars. They contribute to the department’s vibrant research environment and frequently publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and collaborate across disciplines.

Patents & Innovations

While mathematics is fundamentally theoretical, some applied research efforts in areas like optimization, data science, and algorithm development are geared toward real-world industrial and technological applications. The department is also exploring computational tools and educational software innovations.

Publications & Journals

Faculty and students regularly publish in reputed national and international journals, such as Mathematical Reviews, Journal of Applied Mathematics, and SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics. These reflect the depth and quality of research being undertaken.
