Department Summary
Started in 1946, the Mechanical Engineering Degree Program is one of the oldest at BITS Pilani. The department is vibrant with several activities throughout the year. It is a DST-FIST Sponsored (2002-2007) and UGC-SAP Sponsored (2007-2012) Department. We have a research focus that benefits industry, society, and the environment. Several faculty members of the department also share administrative duties. The Department offers two Integrated First Degree Programs and three Higher Degree Programs on campus, apart from off-campus programs under the continued education scheme. The curricula are highly demanding and attract exceptionally meritorious students from all over India. Research emphasis is there in all tiers of education, First Degree, Higher Degree,e and Ph.D. Students look for challenging careers in the best of the organisations within India and abroad. There is huge potential in the department for Consultancy as well as Technology and Product incubation.
The Mechanical Engineering Department at BITS Pilani has a rich heritage. It was renamed from ‘Group’ to a ‘Department’ in October 2010. The Department takes pride in the achievements of its alumni, who have shone in various walks of life.
The general work areas of the faculty in the Department can be broadly summarized as:
- Design Engineering
- Thermal Engineering & Fluid Transport
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Materials, including Nano-Materials and MEMS
- Industrial Engineering & Operations Research
- Robotics & Mechatronics
Mechanical Engineering Department in BITS Pilani has a rich legacy of being one of the oldest and earliest departments of the institute, founded as far back as 1946. The department, since its founding, has been instrumental in shaping engineering education in India. Committed to academic excellence and technological progress, the department has grown steadily over the years into a vibrant education and research hub. In October 2010, it was given official status as an autonomous department, a great achievement along the way toward being a mechanical engineering education leader.
The department now has a broad range of educational programs that represent the depth and breadth of the discipline. It operates two Integrated First Degree Programs and three Higher Degree Programs to provide students with a solid foundation in fundamental principles, practical skills, and problem-solving skills. The department also provides off-campus programs under the Continuing Education Scheme so that quality mechanical engineering education can reach working professionals. These rigorous programs draw some of the smartest people from across India, creating an intellectually competitive and stimulating environment intellectually.
The curriculum of the department is updated from time to time to keep pace with technological developments and the changing demands of the industry. There is a focus on experiential learning, inter-disciplinary studies, and project-based learning. Students are urged to engage in technical festivals, innovation contests, and actual engineering problems. The highly accomplished and experienced faculty mentor students through intense academic training, challenging them to think critically and innovate.
Supported by prominent national schemes like the Department of Science and Technology's FIST scheme (2002–2007) and the University Grants Commission's SAP scheme (2007–2012), the department has continuously progressed in research and infrastructure. These grants have funded the establishment of state-of-the-art laboratories, specialized research centers, and innovative projects. The department remains committed to directing its research agenda toward fields that positively affect industry, society, and the environment, so that its reach is not just within the classroom but also in the world outside.
