Overview

Mission

BITS Pilani came into existence as a Deemed-to-be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act in the year 1964.  In its formative years, the Institute tied up with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, USA.  It adopted a semester system, modular structure of courses, continuous and internal evaluation, letter grading, and the like.  It also created linkages with the industries, which yielded structured “Practice Schools” as an integral component of education. To make further inroads in terms of collaborative participation in research and teaching, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) have been signed with various Universities/Industries at home and abroad.  This would strengthen educational and research linkages, and the exchange of faculty and students exchange to achieve state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities in various fields of Engineering and Science.

An International Programmes and Collaboration Division (IPCD) has been set up with representation in all four campuses of BITS Pilani, to promote relations with renowned Institutions abroad. Students of BITS Pilani have been pursuing Off-campus Thesis / Semester Abroad programs in foreign universities/ institutes ranked in the first 400 by QS and THE (Times Higher Education).  

BITS Pilani has collaborations with several reputed overseas universities and industries. 

Roles / Responsibilities

BITS Pilani strongly nurtures close partnerships with high-profile Indian and foreign universities, and top industries to augment its global presence in academic and research areas. The institution lays great stress on arranging international exposure for students and professors, promoting involvement in cross-cultural education and collaborative research activities. These initiatives are aimed at opening up frontiers and making them globally competent members of their academic fraternity.

A key aspect of BITS Pilani’s international outreach is the administration of student exchange programs and Semester Abroad opportunities with universities ranked among the top 400 globally, as per QS and THE rankings. These programs allow students to engage with diverse academic environments, gain international perspectives, and build valuable global networks, enriching their educational journey.

To encourage high-level research and innovation, BITS Pilani facilitates off-campus thesis work and research in well-known foreign institutions. It also facilitates faculty members to undertake collaborative teaching, joint research projects, and exchange programs, solidifying academic connections and facilitating an environment of collective learning and innovation.

Functioning harmoniously on all four campuses—Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, and Dubai—the global initiatives of the institution are orchestrated to promote quality and consistency. In addition, BITS Pilani takes a lead role in forging Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with top international institutions, thus establishing the platform for world-class education, infrastructure, and collaborative learning opportunities that serve the interest of both its academic family and international collaborators.
