1901
Seth ShivNarainji Birla starts a 'Patshala' in Pilani to educate his grandsons, late Shri GD Birla and late Shri RD Birla.

1925
The 'Patshala' gathers strength, and evolves to become a High School and later on an Intermediate College.

1929
Birla High School evolves into an Intermediate college. Shri S. D. Pandey takes charge as Principal of the College

1943
The Birla Education Trust was founded & the Intermediate College was converted into a Degree college, and additional postgraduate courses.

1962
Shri G. D. Birla announces a decision to establish in India a “higher technical institute to be based on the philosophy and pattern of MIT, USA with assistance of MIT experts.”

1964
Birla Institute of Technology and Science was conceived as an Institute with Dr. G. D. Birla as Founder Chairman.
Government of India, Ministry of Education declares the Institute as ‘Deemed to be a University’ inaugurated by Shri G. D. Birla on August 19, 1964.

1965
The Ford Foundation approves a $1.45 million grant to MIT for developing BITS.

1969
New initiatives in innovative education set in motion by Dr. C. R. Mitra upon taking over as Director

1972
First Practice School station of the institute made operational

1975
A series of changes in administrative setup take place. Practice School Programme made available to All students

1979
Work integrated Learning Programmes started.

1983
Dr. KK Birla took over as Chairman of BITS and expanded the university infrastructure, faculty and student body

1999
Realising a greater need for quality graduates in Engineering and Sciences, BITS increased its student capacity from 2500 to 4000.

2000
BITS opens a branch in Dubai making it the first Indian university with an overseas campus.

2003
Prof. L. K. Maheshwari takes over as the Director of Pilani campus. Dr. S. Venkateswaran becomes the first Vice Chancellor

2004
With the very best in facilities and infrastructure, BITS Goa opens its doors to the student community.

2005
All India computer-based online entrance examination ‘BITSAT’ (BITS Admission Test) introduced.

2008
Added another feather in the cap with BITS Hyderabad starting operations in 2008.

2009
Vision 2020 | Mission 2012 launched.

2020
BITS Pilani confered the Institute of Eminence by UGC, Prof Sudhirkumar Barai made Director BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus
